It is All in the Eyes

It Is All in the Eyes

Without going into an extensive research procedure, there is a general understanding that individuals connect through sight, touch, taste, hearing, and smell. Solomon spoke of these senses, saying, “A worthless person, a man of iniquity, is he that walketh with a perverse mouth, That winketh with his eyes, that speaketh with his feet, that maketh signs with his fingers; In whose heart is perverseness, Who deviseth evil continually; Who soweth discord. Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; On a sudden shall he be broken, and that without remedy” (Prov. 6:12-15); “The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it” (30:17); and “He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall”(10:10). The Psalmist likewise said, “Let not them that are mine enemies wrongfully rejoice over me: neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause” (Psa. 35:19). In the Song of Solomon, Solomon speaks of his beloved, saying, “Thou hast ravished my heart, my sister, my bride; thou hast ravished my heart with one of thine eyes, with one chain of thy neck” (4:9); “Turn away thine eyes from me, for they have overcome me” (6:5). “Thy neck is like the tower of ivory; Thine eyes as the pools in Heshbon, by the gate of Bath-rabbim: Thy nose is like the tower of Lebanon which looketh toward Damascus” (7:4); Behold, thou art fair, my love; Behold, thou art fair; Thine eyes are as doves.” (1:15).

So, what is the present condition of society doing to the connectivity of the population? Masks, six feet apart, and by no means does an individual brush up against a fellow shopper without getting the “evil eyes.” How do you know if the next in line is smiling, or sticking out their tongue? How do you know if they are patient and kind, or impatient and angry? The only way to tell, unless they shove their presence beyond the designated boundaries (which happens often), is by the eyes. What are the eyes expressing? Human kindness, or disdain?

The facts of the matter are often unattainable because of the distance that prohibits a look into the eyes. It appears that a year ago the mask wearers were thieves and rioters. Now they are your neighbor’s five-year-old, and they are not happy. Today, individuals scurry to the safety of their home, take a shower and change their clothes. Enjoy. ret
